The UCLA Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS) is a multi-component social skills training intervention for children, adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum.
The PEERS program is designed to provide an opportunity for individuals on the autism spectrum to practice and improve their social skills in a safe, supportive and structured environment.
During each group session participants are taught important social skills through the presentation of concrete rules and steps of social behavior and are given the opportunity to practice these skills in session during socialisation activities. Parents are taught how to assist their children in making and keeping friends by providing feedback through coaching during weekly socialisation homework assignments.
The PEERS program is designed to be delivered by mental health professionals and educators.
PEERS was developed by staff at the UCLA in Los Angeles, California. The curriculum is based on the Children's Friendship Training programme, also developed by staff at the UCLA.
