Preschoolers with Autism programme
The Preschoolers with Autism programme is broadly based on multiple early intervention and cognitive behavioural techniques and has several purposes. It aims to impart effective coping skills to parents using a systematic approach and structure.
The programme alternates group and individual sessions and focuses on helping parents to discuss their reactions to the diagnosis and to understand more about the problem areas that characterise autism (communication, socialisation and behavioural difficulties) and how these affect their child.
It also aims to help parents to understand their child's current developmental level and any unevenness in the developmental profile and the implications for programme planning and goal setting. Further sessions teach parents about making use of positive behaviour support principles to understand and manage difficult behaviour and support the development of their child's communication skills, social functioning and play skills
